Brighton & Hove is a city with a genuinely distinctive commercial identity — creative, independent, and resistant to the homogenisation that has affected many UK high streets. The North Laine, The Lanes, and Kemptown each have a character that is carefully protected by the local community and by Brighton & Hove City Council's planning policies, and shopfront installation here requires real contextual sensitivity.

The Lanes — the medieval street pattern at the heart of Brighton — is one of the most tightly managed conservation areas in the south-east. The buildings are a mix of genuinely old structures and 19th-century infill, and the Council maintains a detailed character appraisal that governs any external alteration. Shopfronts within The Lanes must respect the historic street pattern, use materials appropriate to the period and style of each building, and maintain a scale that reinforces rather than disrupts the intimate character of the streets. We have worked extensively in The Lanes, preparing heritage statements, liaising with conservation officers, and installing shopfronts that satisfy both the planning requirements and the practical needs of the jewellers, boutiques, and retailers who trade there.

North Laine is Brighton's bohemian independent retail quarter — a grid of Victorian streets north of the station housing a remarkable concentration of independent businesses. The character here is different from The Lanes: bolder, more eclectic, more willing to experiment with colour and materiality. Planning guidance still applies — most of North Laine is within a conservation area — but there is more latitude for individual expression within the guidance than in the more formally controlled Lanes. We have installed shopfronts in bold colours, with unusual profile combinations, and with bespoke detail elements for North Laine clients who want their shopfront to make a statement.

Kemptown's commercial strip along St George's Road and the surrounding streets serves both the local residential community and the significant visitor trade generated by the area's bars, restaurants, and boutique hotels. The Victorian terrace buildings create a consistent scale along the street, and shopfronts that respect this scale — even when they are contemporary in material and finish — tend to sit well in the environment.

Hove's Church Road and the surrounding shopping streets have a quieter, more residential character than central Brighton. The Edwardian and inter-war commercial buildings along Church Road create a modest, well-mannered commercial environment where quality and durability are the primary considerations. We have completed numerous installations in Hove for long-established independent businesses investing in their premises for the long term.

Brighton's coastal exposure is a significant factor in shopfront specification. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of exposed steel elements, and any aluminium frame within a kilometre of the seafront should be specified with enhanced corrosion protection.
